Why China is building hundreds of new airports

Travel News
While alarming and fascinating in equal measure, these headlines conceal another tale -- one of a country undergoing a breakneck expansion into the world of flying as its people take to the sky in rapidly increasing numbers. In the space of barely more than a decade, China has transformed from a nation where few had ever experienced air travel to one where millions of its citizens are flying not only across their own vast territory, but to destinations around the world.Such is the pace of China's ascension to the jet age that stories of wayward passengers are perhaps inevitable -- even if they obscure the fact that many air journeys in China are incident free. But there's more to come. Much, much more.Beijing's new Daxing International Airport conducted its first flight tests with passe...

NEW DELHI — Ed Dohring, a doctor from Arizona, had dreamed his whole life of reaching the top of Mount Everest. But when he summited a few days ago, he was shocked by what he saw.Climbers were pushing and shoving to take selfies. The flat part of the summit, which he estimated at about the size of two Ping-Pong tables, was packed with 15 or 20 people. To get up there, he had to wait hours in a line, chest to chest, one puffy jacket after the next, on an icy, rocky ridge with a several-thousand foot drop.He even had to step around the frozen body of a woman who had just died.“It was scary,” he said by telephone from Kathmandu, Nepal, where he was resting in a hotel room. “It was like a zoo.”This has been one of the deadliest climbing seasons on Everest, with at least 10 deaths. And at le

City Talk: Seeing Savannah through a tourist’s eyes – Business – Savannah Morning News

Travel News
For a few days last week, I entertained a friend who has been to Savannah several times during the last 20 years.   Like many other Savannah visitors, she was in town for a meeting and decided to stay for a couple extra days. Since she had already done so many things that tourists typically do here, she had no particular schedule or plan – no lists of must-see sites or restaurants. We ended up having experiences that were both predictable and unpredictable. Our meanderings left me thinking about the landscape for tourism in Savannah. Some readers were angered, even appalled, by a recent column in which I argued that Savannah is not saturated with tourists as many locals believe. The simple truth is that the city can handle far, far more tourists than we do currently.  Sure

Minister: Sri Lanka needs security audit to build confidence among tourists | Buzz travel

Sri Lanka’s State Minister Harsha de Silva announced that the country is planning an independent security audit to build confidence among tourists. According to the Minister, the measure was necessary after extremists linked to Islamic State bombed churches and hotels on Easter Sunday. “After conducting an independent security audit, embassies and tourist boards of foreign countries will encourage tourism,” he told parliament. “Spending millions on advertising is worthless if we cannot be responsible for tourist safety.” De Silva said it would be worse if assurances were given too quickly and another incident took place. Tourism officials have said 37 nations have issued travel advisories cautioning citizens. Security authorities have said rapid progress is being made with most of
