Oh! You’re going to Efteling?” enthused the hotel porter at the Hilton Amsterdam after asking us our plans for the weekend. “You’ll love it – it’s better than Disneyland.”
If our children Grace, nine, and Violet, four, weren’t excited enough at the prospect of three days at Holland’s largest theme park, they were now.
But could it live up to the hype?
For our journey south, we shunned a hire car and decided to test out the public transport.
It cost just £32 for the four of us and the leisurely half-hour train ride from Amsterdam to ’s-Hertogenbosch through rural Holland gave us the appetite for exploring more of this beautiful country.
After a short bus ride we were dropped off right outside Efteling, which is in Kaatsheuvel.
The experience here starts from the moment you set foot in the park.
Enchanting music plays in the background as you walk up the drive towards the imposing entrance.
The theme throughout is fairy tales, legends and folklore, which adds to the magic.
